The ArcticOscillation (AO) is a large scale mode of climate variability, also referred to as the Northern Hemisphere annular mode. The AO is a climate pattern characterized by winds circulating counterclockwise around the Arctic at around 55°N latitude.

The AO is defined by the departure from normal of the surface pressure within the Arctic Circle ( usually north of 20N). What is the ArcticOscillation - Positive Phase When pressure north of the Arctic Circle is lower than normal, the ArcticOscillation is said to be positive. A positive AO leads to a stronger and straighter polar jet.
May 27, 2015. The Arctic Oscillation (AO) is a pattern of variability in the atmospheric pressures of the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, resulting is large changes in weather from year to year, and decade to decade. The North Atlantic Oscillation and AO are different ways of describing the same phenomenon. The Arctic climate is highly variable.
Development of PositiveArcticOscillation Index Events The yearly average AOIs in 2020 in January, February, and March were higher than previous values, and February exhibited the highest value over the past 50 years, 3.42 ( Figure 1A ). It is noteworthy that the daily average AOI on February 21 was the first to exceed six on record ( Figure 1B ).

Meridional flows correspond with a negative ArcticOscillation, during which a high pressure front dominates in the Arctic. Simulations run on supercomputers foretell more of those intense high-pressure systems dominating the northern Pacific and Atlantic oceans as the 21st century progresses and levels of greenhouse-gasses continue to rise.
The ArcticOscillation (AO) is calculated based on seal level pressure differences (now measured by satellite for the 1000 mb height). (See: http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/daily_ao_index/hgt.shtml ) "The AO index describes the relative intensity of a semipermanent low-pressure center over the North Pole.

This pattern was associated with a positive phase of the ArcticOscillation (AO), continuing the basic AO pattern that has persisted since December. A very high positive AO index (4 to 6) marked portions of February, which has been associated with warm air and stormy weather from Northern Europe into the Barents Sea.
The PositiveArcticOscillation (strong wind) and the Negative AO (weak wind) Source: National Snow & Ice Data Center The Arctic air stays pinned to the north and most of the US stays cozy warm. If the low-pressure areas are weak, the winds are too weak and the cold air escapes.
Overview: The Arctic Oscillation (AO), has been shown to have a big influence on temperatures across the eastern two-thirds of the United States during the winter months. The AO is a rather short term change usually on the order of a few days to a few weeks, compared to El Niño/La Niña which last for months, sometimes years when it comes to ...
Those anomalies were caused by an extreme positiveArcticOscillation (AO) event, with the JFM 2020 AO index of 2.8 being the highest on the record. However, all well-established autumn precursors ...
